Please find below the results of the Sledmere Monuments Time Trial.
The last time Malton Wheelers hosted the Sledmere Monuments 10.5mile time trial was in March 2013 and the weather was terrible, with sleet and wind blasting all the riders. This year was a complete turnaround, although still rather blustery, the temperature was almost balmy.
There was the usual “umming” and “erring” from the riders as to whether a rear disk should be ridden, but most riders decided to ride with a not so deep section front wheel. A deeper section front wheel would catch the wind and unnerve the rider.
The first rider off the line at 14:04 was Matthew Enticknap, member and organiser of the race. After the pusher off, Jamie Strangeway was told off from the time keeper, Geoff Backshall for a too greater push off, Matthew was on his way into Sledmere from Tatton Sykes monument.
The route then took the racers to the turn at Fimber roundabout, returning the start/finish line, a total of just under 11 undulating miles.
The headquarters this year was kindly supplied by Sledmere house. This was a hive of activity where Malton Wheelers members donated sandwiches and cakes which are always a blessing after some strenuous activity. Times were being relayed by Mark Devine to the eager racers who wanted to know how well or bad their time was.
The best time overall was unsurprisingly, Joel Wainman with a time of 24:32. His fellow “Team Swift” team mate Mark Wolstenholme was not far behind with 24:37. Stopping the top three being a Team Swift whitewash though was Phil Goode from All Terrain Cycles with 24:59.
The first Lady was Jo Blackburn from Team Swift 28:15, while in second place was Fiona Beard from Clifton Cycling Club 29:43, but “hats off” to Loiuse Scupham from Scarborough Paragon with 30:14. Loiuse is only 16 and is sure to be winning a few races in the very near future.
The first Junior with a time of 26:01 was Kieran Savage racing for Yorkshire Road Club. This was Kierans first open time trial and was dead chuffed with his result.
A mention must go to Paul Di Mambro who came from Ilkley Cycling Club only to puncture during the race. With his head in hands he slunk away from the party after the event. Better luck next time.
The first Malton Wheeler home was in 15th place, Matthew Enticknap with 26:24. Paul Hickman was 25th, 27:14 and Colin Baldwin 35th
with 28:48.
Malton Wheelers members and more were available to help out for the day monitoring every junction on the course, car parking and organising the headquarters. This event just would not happen if it was not for the helpers. Thanks to all who helped and to the time keepers Geoff Backshall and Richard Foster.
There was a pair of fingerless gloves left behind and number 24, Billy Robinson, please return our number!
