30 April 2008 Race Report - 5 mile Time Trial
Paul Hickman made the best possible start to the Malton Wheelers’ evening time trial series with a convincing win in the 5-mile season opener. A cold wind and a heavy shower of rain just before the start no doubt kept a few potential competitors away, but the race itself enjoyed dry, if chilly, conditions.
Hickman, now better known for his road racing exploits, was making one of his increasingly rare outings in a time trial but showed he’s still got what it takes contre la montre. Ged Kerins was a handful of seconds quicker than Hickman on the wind-assisted leg to the turn but Hickman’s superior strength saw him take over a quarter of a minute out of Kerins on the tough return leg. Given the conditions and the earliness of the season Hickman won with a very respectable 11 minutes 13 seconds, with Kerins finishing 13 seconds down in 11:26 for second place.
One of the best rides of the night was produced by Colin Baldwin who clocked 11:46 for third place despite using a conventional road machine rather than the aerodynamic time trial-specific bike that is the norm for this type of event. Baldwin’s ride was good enough to push long time rival Matthew Enticknap (11:54) into fourth place. Enticknap is still searching for a return to full form following a broken tibia and fibula at the end of last season and clearly still has some work to do. Paul Ramsey, also returning from injury, recorded 13:06 to complete the top five.
Other noteworthy rides included Doug Taylor-Helps (13:29) who, despite using a low-geared fixed-wheel machine, held off newcomer Adrian Taylor (13:37) and Keith Buck (14:53) who just pushed Ian Farrar (14:55) into the lanterne rouge spot by two seconds.

Wednesday 7 May Malton Wheelers’ 10-Mile Time Trial
Charles Goodway stunned spectators and fellow competitors alike with a blistering ride to win last Wednesday’s evening time trial promoted by Malton Wheelers. Goodway, riding for the promoting club, recorded 21 minutes 37 seconds for the ten-mile event beating all bar one of the field by well over a minute. Paul Hickman, off a minute ahead of Goodway, just avoided being caught on the line as he came home in 22:34 for second place. Ralph Lilley (Ferryhill Wheelers) was next best in 22:57, pushing Ged Kerins (23:03) into fourth place and spoiling a Malton 1-2-3 in the process. Lilley has recently returned to the area and is still riding for his former local club, although Malton will be looking to sign him up for next season. Fifth place went to Malton’s Matthew Enticknap (23:29) and other Malton riders filled the minor placings down to eighth which was taken by the best of the Scarborough Paragon’s riders, Dave Thompson, with 24:37.
Due to early season daylight limitations the field was restricted to 20 riders and warm and sunny weather meant that a near full field was achieved with 19 riders facing the timekeeper. A deceptively easy leg to the turn was followed by a hard return into a nagging headwind and most riders struggled towards the finish. Given the less than ideal conditions Goodway’s ride was exceptional and is the fastest ride on the course since it was last used for open events ten years ago.
Thursday 8 May East Riding Road Race league
Charles Goodway scored another victory for Malton Wheelers the following evening as he and five team mates joined over 50 riders in the first of the summer’s East Riding Road Race series. The six Malton riders were in the thick of the action from the start and quickly took control of the lead bunch, working together to whittle it down to an efficient group.
After a number of attempts to break away, Charles Goodway finally got a gap taking just one other rider with him. In a superb tactical move Malton’s Colin Baldwin and Matthew Enticknap then managed to jump across to the leading pair while Charles’ father, Chris, policed the remaining bunch. Eventually another two riders got across to the leaders to make a hard-working group of six. These six contested the final sprint with Charles Goodway taking another fantastic win for the Wheelers while Baldwin and Enticknap finished fourth and fifth respectively.
14 May 2008 Race Report 5m TT
Only three races into the Malton Wheelers’ evening time trial series and already the superlatives are running out as Charles Goodway produced another scorching ride to win last Wednesday’s event. Goodway covered the five miles in a mere 10 minutes 53 seconds to takes the victory by 27 seconds over second placed rider Paul Hickman (11:20) with a resurgent Colin Baldwin taking third place with 11:51.
A sunny but deceptively chilly evening greeted the field of 20 riders and a fresh North Easterly wind made for a tough return leg on the out and back course along the Malton to Pickering Road. With Malton riders taking the podium places Scarborough Paragon were left to pick up the minor places as Mike Potter and Barry Cappelman took fourth and fifth respectively. One of the great things about time trials is that there’s something in it for everyone and there are always races within the main race: Matthew Enticknap (12:53) was the best of three riders on fixed wheel, taking the honours from Doug Taylor-Helps (13:41) and Steve Suddaby (13:58). Unusually, there were also two tandems in the event with husband and wife Keith and Carol Buck getting the better of Ralph Lilley who was teamed up with his son. Some riders are just there to test themselves and foremost of these was surely Michael Hetherton who, although nearing pensionable age, was taking part in his first bike race after a long and successful running career and recorded a very respectable 16 minutes 20 seconds.
21 May 2008 Race Report 10m TT
It was business as usual in Malton Wheelers’ 10-mile time trial on Wednesday evening with Malton’s Charles Goodway taking another win in super-quick time. Goodway just broke the 22-minute barrier with a fine 21:58, beating club mate Paul Hickman (23:04) into second place and the whole field by over a minute.
A warmer evening than for previous events was spoiled by a nagging crosswind which hindered riders all the way round the course and deterred a number of riders from entering. Nevertheless 14 riders faced the timekeeper with most being from the promoting club. Despite Malton’s strength of numbers and taking the top two positions, local rivals Scarborough Paragon put up a decent show with Mike Potter taking third place in 23:42. Scarborough riders also took fifth and six places with the Wheelers’ Matthew Enticknap spoiling their late charge recording 24:17 for fourth place.
28 May 2008 Race Report 5m TT
Paul Hickman pulled off an unexpected win in last Wednesday’s 5-mile time trial promoted by Malton Wheelers, beating in-form Charles Goodway into second place. In fairness Goodway had only decided to ride at the last minute after helping out as starting timekeeper, but Hickman’s 10 minutes 51 seconds was the fastest time recorded on the course in a long, long time and brought an emphatic victory. Goodway’s 11:02 just pushed Ged Kerins into third place (11:03) with Charles’ father, Chris Goodway, taking fourth (11:06) and Matthew Enticknap completing the top five with a personal best 11:18.
The weather flattered to deceive as a warm, still evening turned chilly and a rising southerly wind created a hard opening leg to the race. Nevertheless, Malton riders filled nine of the top ten places, Scarborough’s Barry Cappleman spoiling the clean sweep with eighth place in 12:03, and are now becoming a force to be reckoned with in local races. The Malton Wheelers’ strength was further underlined at the weekend when Hickman and the Goodway father and son duo took the team prize in the Cleveland Wheelers open 25-mile time trial. Charles also took joint first prize in the individual rankings.
4 June 2008 Race Report - 10m TT
An extra ounce of courage in the surge for the line gave Malton’s Paul Hickman the slimmest of victory margins in Wednesday night’s 10-mile time trial promoted by Malton Wheelers. With Charles Goodway away on road race duties, Paul Hickman and Ged Kerins made the best of the fast-man’s absence. Both rode full on for the win but it was the faster-finishing Hickman who came out on top recording 22 minutes 33 seconds to beat Kerins by a single second.
A warm evening brought out a near full field for the event and, despite a fickle wind that seemed to hinder more than it helped, a number of riders recorded personal bests. Foremost amongst these was Mark Hitchcock who, showing a remarkable improvement compared to his last outing, took a well-deserved third place with 22:48. Fourth place went to Matthew Enticknap with another personal best of 23:13, and showing a clean pair of heels to team mate Colin Baldwin (24:00) in the process. With Malton riders taking all five top places it was left to Scarborough’s Barrie Cappleman (24:29) to salvage sixth place and some pride for the visitors.
Other notable rides included recent Malton signings Adrian Taylor and Michael Hetherton. Taylor took 25:55 to complete the ten miles taking eighth place and recording a personal best since his return to racing after several years out of competition. While Hetherton managed 31:54 for 19th place in his first ever ‘10’.
Malton Wheelers run time trial events each Wednesday evening throughout the summer and newcomers are always welcome. The club scene is also looking healthier than it has for a number of years with good attendances on the regular Sunday clubruns and an increasing number of “Easy Riders” events. 11 June 2008 Leavening Scramble
A new name emerged from the pack at the top the sharp rise into Leavening as Mark Hitchcock took top honours in Malton Wheelers’ Leavening Scramble time trial last Wednesday. Hitchcock took 14 minutes and 45 seconds to complete the predominantly uphill course that takes competitors from the bottom of the valley in Norton to the village of Leavening. Second place went to Paul Hickman (14:51) whose deceptively quick, smooth pedalling contrasted sharply with Hitchcock’s aggressive ‘grunt and groan’ approach. Completing the top three for Malton was consistent Matthew Enticknap with 15:10.
Visitor Ralph Lilley (15:32) spoiled the Malton top-five party just beating Gareth Taylor (15:35) after an unshipped chain cost him valuable time. As the only pure climber in the race much was expected from Taylor but, as is often the case, the lighter rider struggled into the headwind blowing down the course. Taylor will get another chance to show off his ascending ability next week when the course switches to a hilly route around Slingsby and Coneysthorpe.

18 June 2008 Hilly 10mile TT
After losing to Mark Hitchcock in the previous week’s event Paul Hickman turned the tables to win Malton Wheelers’ hilly 10-mile time trial last Wednesday. Despite a soaking in the pre-race rain Hickman produced a fine 25 minute, 55 second ride to beat Hitchcock (26:17) into second place. Third place, with 26:38, went to Ged Kerins who is still plugging away despite a lacklustre season.
The ride of the night went to Colin Baldwin with 26:59 for fourth place. Baldwin, although not a natural climber, reckoned the undulating course suited his road-race mentality. Whatever the reason, he put over a minute and a half into usual close rival Matthew Enticknap who finished a distant fifth with 28:35. The heavy rain kept the usual Scarborough visitors away but 13 hardy Malton riders faced the timekeeper. The only other rider was Sam Bormann, currently riding for King’s Lynn but looking for a new club since his recent move to Pickering. Unfortunately Bormann got a soaking for nothing as he missed a turn on the course and failed to finish.
25 June 2008 Race Report 10mile TT
After several weeks absence Charles Goodway made a winning return to Malton Wheelers’ evening time trial series last Wednesday. Goodway was head and shoulders above the rest, recording 22 minutes and nine seconds for the 10 miles. This was despite feeling the effects of his efforts in the National 50-mile Time Trial Championship the previous weekend, where he finished a very creditable 81st. Second place on Wednesday with 22:44 went to Ged Kerins who, although some way off Goodway’s time, was pleased to finally be finding some racing fitness. In third place Mark Hitchcock confirmed his recent race-winning form; just squeezing Paul Hickman off the podium with 22:08 to Hickman’s 22:09. As well as missing third place by a single second Hickman also had the ignominy of being caught on the line by Goodway.
Although Hickman might have been disappointed to find himself in an unaccustomed fourth place, it is testament to the current strength in depth of the Wheelers that a win could from any of five or six riders. With Malton providing 15 of the 18 competitors there’s also a large pool of riders who are still relative novices but who will no doubt improve their time-trialling skills over the coming weeks. The “greenest” of the neophytes was Michael Hetherton (pictured) who has come to cycling after a long career as a runner and was riding only his third ever bicycle race. Although he picked up the lanterne rouge Hetherton is nevertheless enjoying his new sport and is learning that the real challenge, and joy, of time trialling is beating your previous best times.
2 July 2008 Race Report 5 mile TT
Charles Goodway showed that he’s bang on form for this weekend’s Yorkshire Time Trial Championships with a stunning ride in last Wednesday’s 5-mile time trial promoted by Malton Wheelers. On a chilly, blustery evening, with a spot of rain for good measure, Goodway powered round the course in 10 minutes 45 seconds to record a personal best and a club record. The next three riders, Ralph Lilley (Ferryhill Wheelers; 11:11), Ged Kerins (Malton Wheelers; 11:13) and Chris Goodway (Malton Wheelers 11:14), finished with almost nothing between them but they were a long way behind the winner. Another full minute elapsed before Scarborough’s Barrie Cappleman came home for fifth place with 12:20, showing just what a hard night it was.
With a Malton Wheelers team away road racing it should have been a quiet night but 16 riders started the race and there was excitement right through the field. Duncan Humphries and Doug Taylor-Helps tied for eighth place on 13:02, and just eight seconds separated places 10 to 14. The gutsiest ride of the night though must have been Michael Hetherton who, having taken almost half as long again as the winner, finished in last place with 15:14 - still smiling.

9 July 2008 Race Report 15m TT
Malton Wheelers 15-mile time trial Wednesday 9 July 2008
After a surprising fourth place in his previous outing Paul Hickman stepped back on to the top of the podium in Malton Wheelers 15-mile time trial last Wednesday. Hickman has always preferred longer events and hard conditions - and he got both. A cold, damp night, more reminiscent of October than July, kept entries down but suited Malton’s hard men as Hickman covered the distance in 34 minutes 12 seconds closely followed by Chris Goodway (34:17) and Mark Hitchcock (34:43). Hitchcock has been something of a revelation in his first serious season for the Wheelers coming to the fore whenever there are hills in the course. This time however there were insufficient hills for him to trouble the top two. After another close battle Matthew Enticknap and Colin Baldwin filled fourth and fifth places. Enticknap just getting the better of Baldwin by two seconds, coming home in 35:02 to Baldwin’s 35:04.
Yorkshire 10-mile Time Trial Championships
Charles Goodway had a rare off day in the Yorkshire 10-mile Time Trial Championship losing out in the senior event to riders he’s been beating all season. Nevertheless he still finished with a creditable 16th place against the cream of Yorkshire’s time triallists. Charles’ father Chris Goodway also flew the flag for Malton taking an excellent second place in his age category.
16 July 2008 10m Hilly TT Race Report
Mark Hitchcock proved he’s the climber in form when Malton Wheelers returned to the Howardian Hills for their 10-mile time trial last Wednesday evening. After missing out to Paul Hickman on the same course last month Hitchcock secured the victory this time with 26 minutes and five seconds, beating Hickman by a scant four seconds. The cold, windy conditions laid waste to the rest of the field with Matthew Enticknap coming in over a minute down in third place with 27:18, just pushing Colin Baldwin into fourth place (27:20). Enticknap must have found his climbing legs as last time on this course he was over a minute behind Baldwin. There was another big gap before Nick Caddy came in a further two minutes adrift with 29:37 to complete the top five. After that a calendar would have been more appropriate than a stopwatch as the remaining riders struggled with the terrain and the tough weather - can it really be July? Last, but not least, was newcomer M. Pannock, who could have chosen a better night to start his competitive cycling career but was still smiling (or was it a grimace) as he crossed the line with 35:58 for eleventh place.
6 August 2008 5 mile TT
Paul Hickman demolished the field in Malton Wheelers final 5-mile time trial last Wednesday. Recording a personal best and equalling the club record, Hickman scorched round the course in 10 minutes and 45 seconds. Malton club mate Colin Baldwin took second place with a personal best 11:31 just beating Scarborough’s Mike Potter (11:32), but it was really a one-horse race.
Torrential downpours and flash flooding earlier in the day threatened to halt the race but the still air following the storms proved ideal for time trialling. Evergreen Scarborough veteran Barrie Cappleman took advantage of the conditions to finish with a season’s best 11:56 for fourth place while Malton’s Mark Devine made it into the top five for the first time with 12:49.
With the nights closing in the final two events of the evening series, a 10-mile team time trial on 20 August and the one-mile sprint on 27 August, move to the earlier time of 7.00 pm.
12 October 2008 Interclub 10m Time Trial
Cottingham Coureurs’ Chris Whitelam took top honours in last Sunday’s Scarborough-Malton interclub time trial around Burton Fleming. Visitor Whitelam covered the hilly 10 miles in 23 minutes and 39 seconds to edge out Bridlington’s Andy Askwith (23:54) and fellow Brid rider Dave Compston (24:29). This left the organising clubs to fight over the lesser places. Scarborough just had the edge with Dave Thompson recording 24:34 for fourth overall. Paul Hickman was first home for Malton with 24:54 to take fifth, but the Wheelers were left wondering what might have been as, due to a shortage of officials, Hickman had acted as “pusher-off” for the rest of the field and could only ride after finishing his duties, and without the benefit of a warm-up. Malton’s only other rider, Colin Baldwin, produced a fine ride to finish in eighth place with 25:30.
This event has grown in stature over the last few years and the warm, still conditions brought a number of visitors to the event. Malton will certainly want to field a bigger team next year to redress the balance. Thanks to a generous donation of prizes from Yates Cycles, Malton and contributions from Cottingham Cycle Centre the tradition of every rider receiving a prize was upheld.
This event marks the end of a very successful season for Malton with all of the road squad winning their third category racing licences. New signing Gareth Taylor went one better in his final road race; breaking away on a climb, then holding off the peloton for nearly ten miles to take a well-deserved win and gain his second category licence to boot.
